5 foods that are good for your teeth

When we think of looking after our teeth, we usually think of brushing, flossing, using mouthwash and going to the dentist for regular check-ups. But it’s the foods that we eat on a daily basis that are pivotal in ensuring you maintain strong, healthy teeth. Here are five foods that are good for your teeth that you should to get into your diet to keep your teeth in the best possible condition…

1. Dairy products

Dairy products are good for our teeth in many ways. First of all, they’re rich in calcium, which helps replace minerals taken from teeth. They also contain phosphates which is a substance used as a dental treatment to treat incipient dental decay by remineralization. Cheese is particularly good as it helps produce saliva, while if they all are rich in vitamins, they’ll help your teeth also.

2. Nuts

Lots of nuts are good for your teeth because they contain vitamins and minerals. These include peanuts, which have calcium and vitamin D, cashew nuts that stimulate saliva and help clean teeth, and walnuts, which are high in fibre, contain iron, folic acid, magnesium and more.

3. Water

Water is extremely important which it comes to oral hygiene – it’s the main component of saliva, can be used to wash the mouth out from anything which might be doing your teeth harm and, if it’s fluoridated, it can help prevent tooth decay.

4. Fruit/vegetables

To be more precise, it’s high-fibre fruit and vegetables that are particularly good for your teeth. Physically, some of them can literally scrub your teeth as you eat them, while as they can take longer to chew than other foods, they’re great for producing saliva which is great for your teeth. Really fresh fruit and vegetables also have high water content that helps offset the sugar content.

5. Vitamins

Ok, so technically speaking vitamins aren’t a food. But if you get into the routine of taking vitamins every day, your teeth will benefit. The best ones are vitamins A, C and D along with calcium and phosphorus.
